Well well well, just when I was doing so well in my resolution to be more positive and stay happy. I get slapped in the face with a rotting fish! So the economic development that we have been waiting for in Ward 7 is finally being answered. You guessed it, we ward 7 members will be the proud new owners of a weed dispensary in our downtown area none the less! How lucky are we??? It's unbelievable that we are being blessed with this great and reputable business! I know the rest of the city is so jealous that they are getting Targets, Restaurants, and luxury condo and apartment buildings but none of them are as lucky as we are to get their very own weed spot.Because clearly, we don't have enough and the meth clinic right down the street must be lonely.What a bunch of crap. Years ago a Uniform Manufacturing Company was in this building. I have to send a response back to the Department of Health by 12 Noon on 3 February 2012. Minnesota Ave. AGAIN!

Yesterday evening, a pedestrian was hit crossing Minnesota Avenue outside of the Payless shoe store, by the East of River Shopping Center. In other words, in the downtown area of Ward 7. In other words exactly where I said there is a lighting issue that needs to be addressed. (See previous post). AGAIN, there are too many people in that area to not have sufficient lighting. It breeds accidents, and crime. What part of that doesn't Alexander get? Why is she so damn lazy? How can you not know what the downtown area of your own ward looks like?? And based on what I've seen of the great streets renovation on Nannie Helen Ave., they didn't improve the lighting around there either. What a waste. And the other day, I had a door tag from her campaign hanging on my front door with her 'Results' nonesense. I see she is doing a lot of campaigning while people are at work. Too afraid of real questions I suppose.

I dropped my son off at school today, and as I returned, I saw a student from Friendship Academy finish eating his morning sandwich and casually throw the box on the ground like he never gave it a second thought. I watched, and as I could feel myself becoming outraged, I looked around. I couldn't even tell which one was his anymore. Then it hit me. What incentive did he have to not throw his litter on the ground?

Now I am not excusing him, no one should want to live like that and you shouldn't contribute to it. But the trash can at the metro stop was full, there was litter all around. It's not like it would stand out. How easy would it be to get, and keep the streets clean? How easy would it be to mandate that the stores keep the sidewalks in front of their businesses clean? How easy would it be to require Metro to empty the trash cans in front of the metro stops daily? Even if they aren't theirs, surely they realize that they are there BECAUSE of the metro stop. If it's as busy a stop as the one at Minn/Benning intersection, it may need to be emptied twice a day. This is a high traffic, business district. Surely, a CM could require a street sweeper twice a week, right?

I am positive that if the streets and sidewalks were clean to begin with, it would instill a sense of pride in the people who live here and they would think twice before throwing something on the ground so casually. Minnesota Ave and Benning Road look dirty. Period.

Another reason it looks that way is because of the poor lighting. Has anyone ever driven down the street around 6pm? It's like a bad video game from the 80's. There are so many people out there and you can barely see them because there is little to no lighting. It doesn't LOOK safe. Get more street lights on both sides of the street and make it a place that looks inviting rather than sleazy. (Yeah, I said it. I live here and have most of my life and I can say it.)

That is what I will be asking each candidate for Council.

The recently formed joint venture - between Tritec Development and JBG - has just begun construction on its 141-unit apartment, Kennedy Row, on East Capitol Street in Hill East, just two blocks from RFK Stadium.

Construction on the 42,629-s.f. site, under general contractor Clark Builders Group, will take approximately 18 months, and the first apartments will deliver in April of 2013. Kennedy Row will be managed by JBG's residential property management arm (we're told the Kennedy Row website is coming next month).

But all we get are reduced rate senior citizens homes and the proposed Minnesota/Benning Phase II. According to Alexander and her Ward 7 Development Summary it is being billed as:

$108 million project focusing primarily on residential and will include 370 housing units and 20,000sq feet of retail space...There will be 325 affordable rental units
(60% AMI). This is a PRIME location for enticing people to cross that bridge! (Even if it is right by a railroad). Why are we missing the opportunity here? We should make that an office/mixed use building with restaurants etc. and gut the shopping center and build condos there. Revitalize the downtown area! What am I missing? Take a look at what they did by PG Plaza! http://www.oneindependence.com/home.html. COME ON. There's a movie theatre over there to Mayor Gray. Get on it.

The Eden Place project is 100% affordable although you can make up to 120% of AMI.

The Parkside development is going to throw up 1,500-2,000 apartments right next door to Mayfair Mansions, a notorious project. Who is going to pay market rate to live there?

How are we going to get people into the area who can raise the income level in order to entice stores to come to ward 7 if all we are building is massive affordable housing? That's why the apartments on Pennsylvania Ave aren't fairing well and have multiple complaints. (I know people who live there).

Just how much moula goes flows from the constituent service funds directly to the needy? Not much, according to some number crunching done by the advocacy group D.C. for Democracy. The group combed through 2010 records and added up the total money spent by elected officials' constituent service funds on "immediate constituent needs" like rental and utility assistance and help with funeral costs.

East of the River Shopping Center Post Office Closure

I have to admit, I don't really care about the post office closing. The service there is the worst, the people are mean and the place is dirty. Not to mention, I would like to see the whole shopping center bulldozed so we can finally get some development. BUT, I do realize that there are a lot of people who need/use the post office; so here you go.

On Thursday, November 10 at 5:30 p.m., there will be a public meeting concerning the possible closing of the Benning Post Office at the East River Park Shopping Center. The meeting is being hosted by the United States Postal Service and will be held at the Dorothy Height (Benning) Library located at 3935 Benning Rd. NE.

The United States Postal Service is currently conducting a discontinuance feasibility study of the facility operations at the Benning Post Office. The Postal service is studying whether to close the Benning Branch based on customer needs, efficiency and budget restraints. I know how important the Benning Post Office is to our community and I have been advocating for it to remain open. Please see the attached letter addressed to Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton. Bike Safety in Ward 7

This past weekend, I was riding my bike with my young son. Coming down Minnesota Ave. with the light, we went. When all of the sudden, some nitwit coming off the East Capital Street ramp ran into the crosswalk just as my son was in it. She barely missed completely running my son over. She was attempting to make a right on red, but she had no intention of stopping before she crossed into the cross walk. My son was scared to death. He almost doesn't want to ride anymore, and I told him we would stick to bike trails. I am begining to see more people riding their bikes in Ward 7. How long before we get bike lanes?

According to WUSA Channel 9 (and other media outlets) Saturday morning around midnight: An adult male was shot on the 3900 block of Minnesota Avenue in Northeast DC. His injuries are non-life threatening at this time.

Oh no no no. We have done way TOO much for these trifling people to start tearing up the neighborhood again. We will deal with this quickly and definitively at the next PSA meeting.

The RFK Parking Lots are one of the biggest sources of stormwater pollution into the Anacostia. The National Capital Planning Commission has recommended using the northern parking lots for athletic fields and green space. There is not enough space for youth (and adult) sports - soccer, baseball, football, etc. DC should rip out the asphalt lots and replace with usable green space and fields.

I have recently been told that I have been too hard on CM Alexander. Really? I didn't think so but ok. I'm open. I do realize that recently people have stated what a quick response they have gotten from her office and how helpful everyone has been. OK. So I won't chalk that up to it being election time and go into how I know for a fact that several times, I and people I know, have tried to contact her for assistance and received no or a very little response. I will give her followers the benefit of the doubt.

Can anyone list 3 reasons why she should be given another chance to run Ward 7? Can you name 3 things she has done to improve the ward? (If I hear about the library or Deanwood rec. center one more time, my head is going to pop off!) Can you name 3 things? I'm listening......

Follow up to the vendors on Minnesota Ave.

I received a response from Councilmember Alexander's office yesterday regarding our complaints about the vendors on Minnesota Ave. (See previous post.)

The response came in the form of two phone calls in a very timely manner. I was informed that the matter has been discussed and referred to DCRA for investigation of the licenses and operating of the vendors. In addition, Mr. Amin Muslim informed me that he would go by the vendors personally to see firsthand what is going on.

I would like to reiterate that this in NOT about preventing the vendors from making a living. It is about the perception of our neighborhood and respect we have earned. We have a right to clean, orderly streets. You can't just plop down some tables anywhere and set up shop. It brings the neighborhood down visually. We need stores, not vendors.

Our neighborhood is HOT, HOT, HOT! Finally.

Hello 7A06 ANC Single Member Residents: October 5, 2011 Report
This report is to share with you some of the things that were discussed in the Ft Dupont Civic Association, 7A06 ANC and Police PSA 603 meetings.

Some of the same concerns were discussed at all three meeting such as:

1) Safeway Store - residents wants more fresh vegetables, seafood, more variety and
well stocked shelves. They also want a cleaner store, pan handlers removed from out front of Safeway. They want the staff to be trained how to respect and interact with the public (otherwords – customer service training). Mr. Moody and Ms. Smith both managers at Safeway attended the ANC meeting and took questions and listened to concerns for 30 minutes, and they agreed to work with the organization to address all concerns.

2) Traffic Need at Minnesota Avenue and Blaine Street (at the Allen Senior Apartments)
Lynnell Humphrey (Councilmember Alexander’s Constituent Services Representative) and Evie Washington (7A06 ANC SMD Commissioner) will work get a light place there instead of the current flashing light.

3) Vendors with their Tents: Lynnell Humphrey will take the lead on finding out if the Vendors are (a) DC and/or Ward 7 residents and (b) if they have permits from DCRA Commissioner Washington will help to find an appropriate location for the Vendors that are not right on Main Street Downtown Ward 7. If any one has ideas of locations such as extra large parking lots, closed schools, vacant buildings near the business district, please let me know.

4) Redistricting of ANCs: The boundaries of 7A06 have been changed and the new boundaries will be available will be on the ANC and District Council website soon. The final vote has not been taken by the City Councilmembers. This was done to reflect the changes made with Redistricting of all the Wards.

5) Selective Service System – there is a Bill 19-330 Selective Service Registration Rate is before the City Councilmembers to allow young men age 18 to register when they apply for drivers licenses or permits. There are current 3 approved locations now. Registering at the Department of Motor Vehicles will be a 4th location. Registering with Selective Service does not mean joining the Military: The benefits are: eligible for student federal aid and grants, federal job training, federal jobs, citizenship. 6) Post Office Closing – The residents asked that Lynnell Humphrey ask Councilmember Alexander to find out how to keep the Post Office from closing.

A question was asked at PSA 603 meeting as to how to get your calls and complaints moved to a higher priority. 1) If some is happening as you speak to the police, tell them that it is happening right them and give the best possible description. 2) If something is happening on your street or around you have everyone who are witnessing what you see call the police (911) and if this occurs often, call as often as it happens. The more calls from you and the people in your neighborhood the more they priority is assigned.

Maloof Skateboarding has signed a multiyear agreement with Events DC to host the Maloof Money Cup on a permanent skate park to be built on the RFK Stadium Festival Grounds. The contest is Sept. 3-4 and after the contest, the park will be available to the community.

The park will be aproximately 15,000 sq. feet. and will emmulate popular skating areas around DC.

Join Council Member Wells on Thursday, July 28th, for a bicycle ride and discussion regarding the current bicycle and pedestrian conditions of the Frederick Douglass Memorial South Capitol Street Bridge, as well future plans, possibilities, and their implications. We will meet on Thursday, July 28th at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Capitol South Metro stop. As a group, we will proceed south along South Capitol, stopping along the way for discussions of the various implications of the current state of the bridge. As a group, we will cross the bridge, and view the issues regarding the bridge East of the river.

Well the turnout still could be better but this time we did cover some good ground. Thankfully, our ANC, Ms. Evie Washington was in the area and she attended the entire time.

We discussed several issues but settled on addressing excessive amount of trash on Minnesota Ave between Benning Road and East Capital St. The following were the results:

ANC Washington, will set arrange a meeting with CM Alexander to present and discuss our concerns with trash and vendors in that specific areas. Targeted time for meeting is in August.
We will secure a minimum of 10 people to represent the neighborhood at a meeting with CM Alexander.
We will secure a minimum of 10 people to contact the DC Courts regarding reviving the community service program that provided street cleaners on a weekly basis.

We will hold off on scheduling the next meeting until we have the meeting with CM Alexander.

Each police district will host a community meeting to discuss new Police Service Area boundaries in that district. Citizens should attend these meetings to get information and have their questions answered. The first draft of the redistricting map. According to several media reports, a revision of the D.C. Council's redistricting plan will make a few key changes from the initial version. In the revision, the D.C. Jail -- and its 2,000 or so inmates -- would be counted in Ward 7, which would allow for Ward 6 to continue to hold on to both the Hill East and Rosedale neighborhoods.

UPDATE: 6/7/11:

According the the map, Ward 7 is getting the jail and Reservation 13 in the redistricting. On it's face it may look like a decent compromise, however, if you look closer, Reservation 13 is riddled with problems and delays. Do the research. In many ways it's like Ward 6 dumped a big problem in our lap. We should really look into this East River; there is a lot of potential for neglect and discrimination here. This is not something we need to take lightly.

I would like to take this time to thank the residents of East River Heights, specifically on Blaine St. NE for getting involved and getting things done.

Recently we had a serious problem with some of our tenants on the block. We had upwards of 30 children who would play in street, block traffic, throw litter in others yards, curse like sailors, trespass repeatedly, destroy public property and be out all hours of the night. Between the two tenants, they have 11 kids so the rest were visiting which made it worse. After several MONTHS of constantly talking to the kids and calling the cops, we took matters into our own hands and reclaimed our neighborhood.

We wrote a letter to the police commissioner, the housing authority, the homeowners themselves and the ANC. We called for a meeting to discuss the issue. We explained, in no uncertain terms, that we were not going to allow anyone, homeowner, renter or whomever, change the character of our neighborhood we had been working so hard to improve. We made it clear to the homeowners that they needed to get their tenants under control or we would take action. In short, we banded together and called them out. Since then, the extra visitors have disappeared and the kids have learned to play while being respectful of others. They are no longer cursing and running up and down the street. They ride their bikes and play ball in their yards or on the front sidewalk. They are no longer in other peoples yards or sitting on others cars.

Thank you to our ANC representative, Evie Washington as well for attending and following up with people after the meeting. She is new to this and she is still doing a great job! Thank you!

Thank you to ANC Villareal Johnson, who happened to be there for another meeting and took the time to come and sit in on ours and address some concerns. Your time was appreciated.

Thank you to our former ANC Eddie Rhodes who chaired the meeting and helped to keep it from getting out of control as emotions ran high at certain points.

Late June or early July – The second and final vote will occur

Please, do your research and make your voice heard. This is important and will determine the future development in Ward 7!

Guess what time it is??? 1:05 am and of course.....they started fighting. Gee. Who would have imagined that? Oh yes. All 25-30 of them poured out onto the street about 15 min ago fighting and yelling. Shocking isn't it? Well prepare to be surprised, because guess who was NO DAMN HELP? You guessed it, the fighting 6th district police officers. Oh yes, I called and they came and drove up and down the street and the kids walked off and back into the house and....well you know what happened. Absolutely nothing. Zip. Zero Zilch. But don't be disappointed. I called the actual precinct this time and got exactly what I expected. NOTHING. Just an attitude and nothing. "Well I can transfer you to 911. We don't dispatch from here. There's nothing I can do for you". Yep you guessed it. The big ol' "I can't do nuthin' for you, man" crock of trash I've come to expect. "If its a party and it's reasonable, they can't tell them to stop." REALLY? I'm calling from several homes away and can hear the music, but that's reasonable and you can't do anything? It's 12:50 AM! That's nothing reasonable. I hate to say it, but I must admit, if I lived on Wisconsin Ave, NW, I get the distinct feeling there would be something done. Shameful really. Shameful.

I have spent the past 1 1/2 hours speaking with the police regarding an out of control house party on my block. The cops come, sit in their cars and the kids run and hid in the back yards of mine and other houses. The cops come again and sit there staring at the kids and the kids stare at them, and they drive off and the kids continue to party and make noise. When I call to complain, I am made to feel like there is something wrong with me. What's up with that? It at least 30 kids hanging out and making noise. If I lived in ward 2 the cops would have gotten out of the cars, went in the house and shut it down. Why are we to expect less? Council member Alexander is going to get an earful. This is so dang unacceptable. I dont' want to be kept awake listening to loud music and kids in the street. Isn't there a noise ordinance? What the hell is so damn difficult with doing your job? Even the 911 operator understood it was wrong, but not the cops. It takes 4 cars for a stupid ticket, but you don't have enough cars to shut down a teenagers party that's disturbing the peace? Disgusting.

Recreational Field Hockey?

Anyone interested?

I am looking to see if there are any women with little to no experience in playing field hockey who are interested in forming a recreational team. I played years ago in school but not competitively or anything and have been thinking about playing as a way to get/stay in shape and just have some fun. There are so many softball and other types of teams, but I always like field hockey.

I think maybe 1 hour once per week or even every 2 weeks. Just for fun. No pressure. If you played before, that's fine too, but just know others may not have.

The rules say 11 players per team, so far, I have 1...me.

Washington, D.C. -- Walmart announced a two-year plan to open four stores across the District, all scheduled to open in 2012.
The new stores will be located at 801 New Jersey Avenue NW; Georgia and Missouri Avenue NW; Capitol Heights (East Capitol Street and 58th); and New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road. The size of each store will be between 80,000 and 120,000 square feet.
The stores will offer a full grocery selection, including fresh produce, a bakery, delicatessen and organic food items as well as a full service pharmacy and a wide variety of general merchandise.
Walmart plans to open local hiring centers and will announce details soon. The retailer also plans to broaden its commitment to supporting local organizations, particularly in the areas of workforce development and education.

Looks like so far we got what we deserve, some market rate condos (yes!) and 325 AMI (area median income) rate apartments. Here's hoping that they don't screw us over and subsidize the apartments because then we will have another mess on our hands. Plus, a decent effort at 23,000 sq. feet of retail. Not bad when you consider next up is a complete re-do of East of the River shopping mess. Rumor has it no leases have been renewed so hopefully that will start demolition by 2013. By then, we should be well on our way.

Next up should be a revamping of Fort Mahan. Can anyone say DOG PARK?????? It's not like we don't have the room.

Does anyone know what the actual AMI is?

Is there really a choice that will help Ward 7? I doubt it but it's not like we have any other choice.

Fenty lost a straw poll today in his own ward. I don't think it really means anything. But I don't have faith in either of them to really develop and promote living in ward 7 or east of the river for that matter. What do you think?

Ray's the Heat

Just got back from my second visit to Ray's. As usual, the food was great and people were very nice and helpful. Our waitress went missing towards the end and took too long to get the check, but the remaining staff more than made up for it. Very nice and proficient.

I must say that we will continue to patronize the restaurant. One monkey won't stop the show!

My hope is that this messages stirs up the same fervor that I see in discussions about Ray's The Steaks and restaurants installing bullet proof glass...

Washington Parks and People has been working in Marvin Gaye Park for a while now. In little over a year as the assistant director at the Riverside Center, I have seen great strides not only in the physical appearance of the park, but in the surrounding community.

There have been millions of dollars spent in three different major areas of the park, a new playground installed, a 24 air compressor and start of a youth bike repair shop, youth and 6D lead bike rides, and over night camping (co sponsored by the Boys and Girls Scouts, 6D and ANC7C), which by the way, was the first camping event ever staged in the park.

As these programs have grown, I have also witness a change in some of the youth that frequent the center and park. I have young men with the skills to do basic bike repair, and witness them working together to fix young siblings bikes, kids and police officers working together to pitch tents,and kids ask for peaches, apples and tomatoes instead of candy and chips...

Every Saturday from 11 to 3 pm, Riverside/MGP has a Farmer's Market, which accepts and EBT/WIC Vouchers. This is our commitment to increasing healthy food options in the Ward. We NEED your support! Although our market is small, we are committed to learning and growing and cannot do this without you.

Our produce is supplied by Red Truck Farms (a woman born and raised in DC.. East of the River) according to seasons and is local produce with a mixture of organic and conventional fruits and veggiesan and our market manager lives in the Watts Branch Community she serves,

We cannot grow without the continued support of the community, so blog, talk and come on out and visit.

Is it just me or are others seeing a lot of diversity in Ward 7? I see people of all races walking around, walking dogs and in the local Safeway. I have to say I am very excited that people of all walks of life seem to have discovered what we have here and want to be a part. I for one would like to say welcome to any and everybody who wants to make improvements.

I have a poll on this page that asks if and when you think Downtown Ward 7 will be revitalized. While I have received only a few votes, 80% voted 'never'. I would like more insight into that vote. Any ideas? Would anyone who voted care to explain?

Ray's the Steaks!

I just returned from the new Ray's the Steaks! Great food, good people. The wait staff was very nice and attentive. You could tell some of them were training but still good. There were approximately 25 people in there so for a Wednesday night, that's really good. The food was good!

We had a few fools standing around outside looking in and being loud trying to make it unpleasant for patrons but they moved on quickly, especially since the police are in and out of there every 5 minutes. But it's not done in an obvious way. They just came in and stood by the bar speaking with the bartender.

All in all; a nice evening out with the family. I am very happy that Ray's is in our neighborhood and hope they are happy here too. And the best part, all we had to do was walk home! Fantastic.

Benning Library

The library is open. Please bring your children by to utilize this facility. It's awesome. Really. They could use more/newer books; but I'm sure they are working on that. But it really is a sight to see architecturally.

I don't' understand why people would be upset over this area finally getting the recognition it deserves. It's simple, if you want to be a contributing member of this area, stay and enjoy it. With these upcoming changes, you can be proud of where you live. If you don't want to see your area become a better place, move. It's not a big deal. Why wouldn't you want the neighborhood to grow and embrace new people, gain amenities etc.? Stop always making it about race. It has nothing to do with it.

Fort Mahan Park

Volunteers are needed this weekend to help clean up and renovate Fort Mahan Park near the corner or Minnesota Ave. and Benning Road. If you are willing to help paint, plant, landscape or just clean up, please plan to attend.

The event starts at 7:00 am and lasts until 5:00 pm. Please no children, only middle school aged kids and up for safety reasons.

They are planning to create new park entrances, clean up park and surrounding pathways, landscape, revive hiker-biker trail, improve ball field, repair the surrounding fence, provide an extention to the new Marving Gaye park and install a basketball court.

Lincoln Heights

I am concerned and wondering if those of you that have read through these Revitalization plans before can help.
Below you will find the link for the revitilization project for Lincoln Heights. As I read through the plan, it appears that with all the restrictions, (i.e. Right to stay/return and 1 for 1 replacement) this may simply be a renovation of the previous buildings with all the problems. But further into the documents, the plans list the total number of units ranging from 500 to 900 with the replacement units ranging from 100-300 with the rest remaining for market rate.

Does anyone know anything about this New communities type of housing?

Police action on Minnesota Ave.

This is actually just one block outside of East River Heights but it is important to mention. Although it unfortunately ended in the death of three people, I believe an excellent job was done by all the police jurisdictions involved to contain the problem as best they could.

Anne Arundel County police found two women shot to death in a house in Lothian early Wednesday morning. They got a tip that the shooter was spotted in a car in Upper Marlboro. So they called their colleagues in Prince George's County and asked them to check it out.
That professional courtesy led to a 20-minute chase through Prince George's that ended about 10 a.m. Wednesday when Prince George's police fatally shot the suspect in Southeast Washington.

Enough is enough.

I walk past the two following stores almost everyday and I am just fed up. EVERY day that they are open, Monday thru Saturday there are vagrants, and drunks lined up in front of these two stores. It's disgusting. The other day, there was a drunk man in a wheelchair half passed out just sitting there. I was going to call the police but someone came past and wheeled him away. Today, he is back, along with 3 drunk half passed out friends. Really? Are you that drunk that you can't even go home to pass out?

I appreciate any help. We will discuss this at the next neighborhood meeting.

I just finished listening to the River East bloggers on WAMU. I think they did a wonderful job! Bravo!!

I must mention though, the inevitable comment was made by a caller about our 'real agenda' in blogging. People tend to think when we speak of revitilization we are looking to move out low income families and make it so only upper income people can move in. It's not true.

When I first got together and spoke to some of my neighbors, I realized that some of us had fundamental differences in our vision for the future of Ward 7 and more specifically, East River Heights. However, the one common goal was for our neighborhood to have more amenities and access to the rest of DC. The only real way for our River East communities to gain access to the current revitalization of DC is to get honest about what it's going to take. Ward 7 and Ward 8 have a high level of lower income families. There is nothing wrong with that. They are a part of who we are and many of them contribute more to our society than others. But the fact is, in order to participate in the revitilization, we need to experience economic development. That means some high profile chains such as Target, Wal-mart, Applebees' or Friday's etc. must invest. In order for them to build here, they need to know our residents have a certain level of average income in order to patronize thier business. So in order to achieve, we have to attract more people with a moderate income.

I can't speak for other blogger's but I am fairly certain they agree that we blog to attract people, not to get rid of people. We are looking to make outsiders aware that this is a vibrant, caring community that can be more than what it currently is. We are looking to attract people to our area that will have a vested interest in contributing to the overall community; not just 'rich people'. If these opportunities come to River East, everyone that lives there benefits.

I LOVE Ward 7 and River East. It belongs to me, it belongs to you and it belongs to any and everyone who lives there. Not just low income, not just middle income. It belongs to US. I personally don't care how much my neighbor makes. I just care that they love this place like I do. They don't have to share all of my ideals, just a love of River East. It's time that River East is respected for what it it; a good community that's getting better. In order for it to do so, some things will have to change and let's face it; change always ruffles some people's feathers.

That's all I can say.

Minnesota and Benning

According to the East of the River community newspaper, the plans for our corner at Minnesota and Benning, have been put on hold. This is disappointing because the transformation of this corner is crucial to improving the face of the neighborhood.

The disagreement is over how to improve the land. Donatelli and Blue Sky are contracted to build "affordable and market-rate housing with ground-floor retail." Part of the community is holding out for something major to be done to improve the traffic congestion, which admittedly is horrendous. Hopefully, the differences can be worked out before the contractors back out. Is this really an argument worth loosing the development over? A similar building is being constructed in Hillcrest. With this economy, it would be a shame to allow this opportunity to pass. Hopefully the two sides will spend less time arguing over this and more time coming to an agreement. We would hate to loose the investment in our community.

Deanwood Community Center and Library

The Deanwood Community Center and Public Library is expected to be completed by Summer 2010. It will be over 63,000 square feet with an INDOOR POOL, gym, daycare and library of course. Drive by to get a good look at what we have going on!

Ward 7 is getting it's first sit down restaurant in years! Ray's the Steaks is coming along and will hopefully open soon. We are sure that Ray's will provide a nice place for the employees of the soon to be completed DOES building to eat during the lunch hour. We need to make sure that Ray's is successful and will also stay open to serve the neighborhood in the evening.

Remember, we need to respect the businesses that invest in the neighborhood a chance. Patronize and promote them in the area. It will be nice to have somewhere to go with the family after work.
